Buying a condo on St. Croix may rate up with the best decisions you could ever make. I'll delve into the general concepts of purchasing a St. Croix condo here; use other pages on this website to help decide which of the various St. Croix condominiums best fits your personal needs. No matter which complex excites you, your only regret may occur on days as you trudge through the snow and think to yourself "Why in the world am I here while my condo in St. Croix awaits me?"

Let's start with the location. Just in case you didn't know or need a reminder, St. Croix makes up part of the United States Virgin Islands. It's two primary sister islands in the USVI group include St. Thomas and St. John. The US Virgin islands lie about 30 miles to the east of Puerto Rico, approximately a two and a half hour flight from Miami. Speaking of cities in Florida let's start with a population comparison.
Florida 19,317,568 | Miami 408,568 | US Virgin Islands 106,405 | St. Croix 50,601 | Christiansted 6,626

Now let's look at the other extreme. St. Croix does offer enough of a full time resident population that it hosts numerous great places to eat and commercial activities. Compare that with islands around 1000 residents like San Salvador, Barbuda or Jost Van Dyke where you may feel restricted to your condo or resort because not much else exists. As a new condominium owner you will quickly discover another important feature of some population means stores for supplies, furniture, appliances and workmen to help with repairs. Imagine the cost and hassle of shipping every little thing you needed for your vacation condo. While one hopes you never need it, St. Croix offers a hospital and local health professionals.

People who enjoy St. Croix like a quieter pace. If you want the population density of Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Orlando think about a tropical destination such as St. Thomas, St. Martin, Cancun or Nassau in the Bahamas. Compared to hunkering down during a blizzard many locations seem warm, but in reality most locations in the contiguous United States fail to offer the temperatures one basks in while enjoying St. Croix. During the winter Florida drops down to the 40 or 50 degree range, you may even observe a rare snow there, the same in the southwest. St. Croix remains at 70-85 all winter. A second home in Florida or Arizona in the summer might subject you to heat reaching 120 or more. Once again St. Croix stays in the range of 70-85. Bugs never belong in a restaurant, but I've seen many in Florida that could appear on the menu they were so large. Many people in St. Croix leave their windows open without screens. While I don't go that far myself, I rarely worry about mosquitoes nor can I report numerous sightings of any large insects.

While St. Croix can't brag about being the most accessible island in the Caribbean, it should meet the needs of most people. Typical condo owners find they can travel to St. Croix by jet with one change of planes. Indeed, almost anywhere one flies to these days could be described the same way, as jet travel with one stop. For our discussion of where to buy a warm weatherl vacation condo potential property buyers need to see the other ends of this scale. Places such as San Juan, Antigua, Cancun or Nassau can be reached non-stop from many cities. On the other end places including St. John, Tobago, Anagada or many of the Grenadines may not even have an airport and require a ferry from another island to even get there. Islands with small airports like Nevis, Anguilla, Vieques and more may require an extra leg in a small propeller driven plane.

Caribbean islands usually associate themselves with another countries either from history or a current political connection. When buying a condominium people make a huge financial commitment. While few Caribbean islands face the political uncertainly of Grenada in 1983, it's comforting to know that St. Croix exists as a territory of the United States. The currency is the US dollar, the official language is English, Regular mail moves through the United States Postal Service without extra cost. When traveling to St. Croix you don't need a passport and you skip an intense customs inspection when returning to the US and enjoy duty free shopping in St. Croix. There is no obnoxious departure tax. Certain cell phones even operate just like you were in your own home town. Most of all, owners need not worry about a revolution or a government takeover of their condominium.

Potential Caribbean condo buyers generally enter a realtor's office with common prerequisites. Most look for the island where they buy a condo to offer diving, beautiful white sand beaches, clear warm water and palm trees. Most Caribbean or Bahama islands accurately make these claims. Some desire vacation property on an island with golf courses, casino gambling, interesting history and culture, varied topography and friendly people. Any of these could knock several islands from the mix. St. Croix offers all of these features. For some people a perfect tropical condo may also include an island offering more personal interests. For example St. Croix offers a wide selection of athletic events throughout the year. Well known for the St. Croix International Triathlon in May, travelers may partake in many more triathlons throughout the year as well as running races, swim competitions, bike races and more. Athletes from mainland areas may not find this trait unusual, but compare an event just about every weekend to a single competition every other month and you quickly realize St. Croix stands far above other Caribbean islands on this topic. Interested in rum making, farming and botanicals, local cuisine? You may find St. Croix provides something special for your personal tastes. Condo owners tend to stay longer at their destination than a casual vacation traveler. When on an island for weeks or months at a time people look for interesting activities and St. Croix provides a full menu.

Best of all, condos in St. Croix cost much less than most other tropical locations and owners electing to rent out their condo will find an active short term rental market and even some long term tenants. No matter the balance of personal use and income production, the economics to buy a condo on St. Croix make it a more affordable location than most other properties. Take a look at the inventory of condos for sale on St. Croix then come down and visit, you may find a condominium on St. Croix fits as both a perfect vacation home and investment.
